Soka Gakkai International (SGI)

‘Soka Gakkai’ means ‘Value-Creating Society’, reflecting the purpose of Buddhism, which is for us to develop the wisdom, courage, compassion and power to create value through all our actions in society as a whole. SGI comprises about twelve million members in around 192 countries and territories around the world.

The primary goal of SGI is to become a strong, united force, able to break through prejudice and conflict, transcending the divisions of nationality or race.

Ultimately, our world will only change when the hearts of human beings change, so first and foremost, we are a movement of individual transformation.

The primary activity for SGI members is the discussion meeting in local districts, which are forums for dialogue and human connection in a world that seems increasingly starved of such opportunities.

Through small group meetings, we have been able to establish a large enough membership to engage in community support initiatives and social change. These stand alongside our efforts to transform society through our own personal revolution.

At a time when many people are recognising the need for a shift in thinking in order to establish a sustainable world for the future, SGI is actively teaching people how to live a value-creating life and have meaningful interactions with others.

This video introduces Soka Gakkai members who overcame adversity through their Buddhist practice, and found fulfilling ways to create value in their local communities.
